Public meeting on Fort Concho visitors center

The public is invited to a special meeting Tuesday night to discuss Fort Concho’s new visitor center.

The gathering will be from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. at the fort’s Barracks 1, 630 S. Oakes Street. Guests will hear about the goals for improving the visitors center while adding thoughts on and ideas for the new facility’s design.

Representatives from Antenora Architects of Austin and from Quinn Evans Architects will be present to hear ideas for creating a visitors center that better serves the community and the thousands of guests who visit Fort Concho each year.

The current visitors center, with a gift shop, exhibit area and office, occupies half of Barracks 1.

“This space was a tremendous improvement in 1995 when it opened,” Fort Concho Manager Bob Bluthardt noted. “But we have outgrown it. We need to expand and improve Barracks 1 and 2 to provide a more satisfying experience for guests.”
