Lyft drivers required to have City permit

Post Date:04/21/2017 10:32 AM

Lyft drivers in San Angelo are required under the City’s taxicab ordinance to seek a chauffeur’s license through the Police Department and to display the permit in their vehicles.

Lyft links drivers for hire with passengers via a mobile app. The service recently launched in San Angelo.

Sec. 5.10.107 of the City’s Code of Ordinances requires that before driving a taxicab, interested drivers must apply for and obtain a City chauffeur’s license. The ordinance defines a taxicab as a chauffeured vehicle used to transport people for pay, that is open to the public and that operates on irregular routes and schedules on a call-and-demand basis.

The forms to apply for a chauffeur’s license are available in the records division at the Police Department, 401 E. Beauregard Ave. The application seeks basic information about the applicant, including criminal and driving records, mental and physical health, and any history of substance abuse. Applicants must pay a $25 fee. Renewing a license costs $10, unless it has been revoked or has expired.

Once the application has been submitted to the SAPD, obtaining a chauffeur’s license takes a minimum of 24 hours. The permit must be displayed on the passenger side of the driver’s dashboard, according to the ordinance.

For more information about the City’s chauffeur license, call the SAPD’s records division at 325-657-4250.
