Airport to host emergency preparedness exercise

Post Date:07/07/2017 11:10 AM

San Angelo first-responders and the Office of Emergency Management for the City and Tom Green County will partner with Goodfellow Air Force Base and two local hospitals in emergency preparedness training Thursday morning.

The exercise will begin about 8:30 a.m. at San Angelo Regional Airport. Passers-by may see fire engines, ambulances and police cars – with sirens and lights on – rushing to and at the scene. Locals should neither be alarmed nor call 911.

The training will involve responding to a simulated, on-ground crash between a military jet and a passenger plane. First-responders and Goodfellow personnel will be called to the scene as Shannon and San Angelo Community medical centers ready themselves to receive and treat injured victims portrayed by Goodfellow troops and local volunteers.

Such exercises help hone the skills, protocols and communication among those who respond to real-life catastrophes.
