Fort Concho and the Concho Valley Archaeology Society host the 18th annual Archaeology Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, on the fort’s northeast corner at Flipper at Burgess streets. The event is free.

As part of National Museum Day, Fort Concho will offer free admission to its entire site from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The San Angelo Nature Center, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and Miss Hattie’s Bordello Museum will also offer free admission all day.

At the Archaeology Fair, dozens of booths and stations will offer programs and hands-on activities. The program covers historic and pre-historic cultures that have called the Concho Valley home over the past five centuries.

Basket-making, face-painting, native plants, “digging in the dirt,” Native American culture, frontier sports, bow-and-arrow demonstrations, blacksmithing, frontier soldiers and artillery, and prehistoric food samples will be available in Barracks 6, the Commissary and surrounding porches and grounds.

Fort Concho hosts the fair as part of National Museum Day, which celebrates museums’ cultural contributions. Free admission at the art museum, 1 Love St., from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; the Nature Center, 7249 Knickerbocker Road, from noon-5 p.m.; and the bordello museum, 18 E. Concho Ave., from noon-4 p.m. offers a chance to experience art, history and nature in one special day.
