The Recreation Division manages facilities such as the City's two recreation centers, Love Municipal Pool, the San Angelo Nature Center and the Texas Bank Sports Complex. Additionally, Recreation is responsible for a host of programming, including senior services, athletics, an aquatic program, summer day camps and special events such as the annual Date Night.

Challenger Baseball League

challenger baseball

The Challenger Division was established for boys and girls with physical and Intellectual disabilities, ages 5-18, to be able to play sports. Teams are set up according to unique abilities, rather than age or gender, and can include as many as 10-12 players. Challenger games can be played based on the child's abilities and are not limited to tee-ball games, coach-pitch, player-pitch or a combination of the three.

In a Challenger game, each player gets a chance to bat. The side is retired when the offense has batted through the roster, when a pre-determined number of runs have been scored or when three outs are recorded. No score will be kept during Challenger games. The Challenger players wear uniforms and safety equipment.

One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field and whenever possible encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. The buddy is always nearby to help when needed.

Challenger games will be played on Thursday evenings at Texas Bank Sports Complex beginning at 6:30 p.m. Depending upon the number of teams, each team will play four to six games, starting April 13.
