The City Animal Shelter is closed for intake until Nov. 4 due to a positive case of canine distemper.
The disease originated outside of the shelter and was brought in by a dog from the community. Several dogs have potentially been contaminated. Dogs that are inoculated against distemper are protected from the disease and will continue to be available for adoption.
Concho Valley PAWS is handling medical treatment of the dogs and monitoring the rest of the animals for signs of distemper.
Dogs that are in danger to themselves or others, injured or sick, will still be accepted into shelter care.

Concho Valley PAWS will follow up with recent adopters to ensure dogs are still healthy and asymptomatic. Owners who have recently redeemed their dog should follow up with their veterinarian for any medical concerns.
Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous systems of dogs. It is usually transmitted through contact with respiratory secretions and is often carried by wild animals, such as skunks, raccoons and foxes. It is often fatal. Distemper is easily preventable if pets are vaccinated. Symptoms of distemper include vomiting, diarrhea, eye discharge, tremors and seizures.
