Welcome to Microchip Scanner Station
We appreciate you leashing the animal and heading to one of our microchip scanner stations. If you cannot safely contain the pet, then call Animal Services at 325-657-4224.
Step one: Check for tags or other identification.
- If the pet has tags, then call or text their owners and set up a reunion.
- If they have a rabies tag, then call the vet office it originated from.
- Sometimes the owner information is stitched directly onto the collar or harness so make sure to look there, as well.
Step two: Scan for microchip at Animal Services or another microchip scanner location.
- Push the scanner's power button and ensure sufficient battery.
- Starting between the pet's shoulder blades, scan slowly across their back in an "s" motion.
- Scan down the back and sides including neck and shoulders all the way down the legs.
Step three: If the pet has a microchip, make note of the number by snapping a quick photo of the scanner's results.
- Look up the microchip number on 24PetWatch's found pet list.
- If the pet's microchip is not registered there, then look up the number on AAHA microchip lookup to see the microchip company the chip originated from. Call the company and ask for them to contact the owner.
Step four: If the pet does not have a microchip or the above steps don't quickly lead to reunification, hold on to the pet for 48 hours.
- Pets don’t typically wander too far from home, so the chances are that someone is looking for them close to where they were found.
- Consider enrolling in our Good Samaritan program to temporarily house the pet. The pet will receive shelter vaccines.
- Spread the word in your neighborhood apps and social media.
- Download and edit a found pet flyer to share online.
- Post a picture/description on the local lost and found website helpmegethome.com.
- Be sure to check out these tips for taking photos of found pets.
Step five: Return the microchip scanner to the station and notify staff if batteries are low.
Thank you again for investing in this pet's well-being by attempting to return them home. San Angeloans such as yourself are what makes this community a great place for people and pets.
