About us

Established in 1893, Fairmount Cemetery serves as a final resting place for many San Angelo area residents. Numerous historic monuments fill the site and many date back to the 1800s. The cemetery encompasses more than 57 acres and is designated as a Texas Historic Landmark. The cemetery, rich in history, includes buffalo and Confederate soldiers, soldiers from World War I and II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. Additionally, the cemetery has a memorial site for one of the Sept. 11 victims of the Pentagon attack. Many founders of the City of San Angelo, along with their families, are interred at Fairmount.

Mission statement

Fairmount Cemetery’s primary mission is to maintain and support its 57 acres in accordance with Texas state laws governing perpetual care cemeteries. In addition, Fairmount provides services and assistance to the public and funeral homes, as well as genealogy information to interested parties. The cemetery is also responsible for keeping accurate burial, deed and related documentation.

Cemetery hours

Fairmount Cemetery is open to visitors 365 days a year. The main entrance is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to sunset. The rear exit gate is only open during funerals.

The cemetery office is located across the street from the main entrance at 1120 W. Avenue N. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday except for designated City of San Angelo holidays.

Funerals

Funerals are generally held Monday through Friday, except on holidays (MLK Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day). Graveside funerals can be held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Good Friday and the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas. Overtime charges will apply on these days.

Spaces available: 200+

Fairmount Cemetery has not reached full capacity. Many burial spaces are available in numerous areas of the cemetery. An archaeological project has added 546 spaces certified as open for use. These spaces are located throughout the cemetery and available in groups up to as many as 12 spaces in one lot.

Burial space purchasing options

A. Spaces cost $2,500 each, including perpetual care.

B. Perpetual care of $500 is put in a trust account at First Financial Bank for the lifetime upkeep of the space.

C. There are two ways to purchase spaces at Fairmount Cemetery:

  • Full payment at purchase, or
  • On contract for one to four years. You would pay 10 percent down, and the monthly payment would depend on how many years you wanted to pay the contract off. There is a 10-percent interest on the paid principal balance per year, which figures to 0.8333 percent per month.

D. Once the space or spaces have been paid in full, you will be issued a deed that is signed by the mayor of the City of San Angelo.

E. If a death occurs while paying off space, the space must be paid for in full before the service can be held.

F. The only other charge to the cemetery is a $100 marker survey fee, which is payable at the time of the funeral if a marker has not already been placed. The veteran marker survey fee is $25. This is paid at the Cemetery office either by the family or the monument company setting the marker.

Columbarium prices

Fairmount Cemetery now has niches available for purchase in the new columbarium.

The columbarium offers a 12-inch-by-12-niche that holds one or two sets of cremains for $2,400. An 8-inch-by-8-inch niche costs $1,800 if used for two sets of cremains or $1,200 if used for one.

The larger size is limited to 32 units. There are 430 niches available of the smaller size.
