The San Angelo Fire Department conducts training academies during which recruits are trained to be certified firefighters/paramedics. Each academy, which is currently conducted at 3154 U.S. Hwy. 67 N., lasts approximately 14 months, with cadets spending 40 hours per week in rookie school. While in training, recruits get hands-on and classroom training with fire suppression, hazardous materials, emergency medical training as well as an overall education with fire sciences and safety.
The academy also ensures all recruits meet state and federal mandates for continuing education requirements.
Upon completion of training and certification, recruits are assigned to Central Fire Station (Fire Station No. 1) for first-hand experience.
The City's fire training center was a $4.4 million project and is located behind the City’s Animal Shelter on U.S. Highway 67 North. The 12-acre complex includes a burn building of at least five stories, a large classroom facility, offices for training staff and fire props.
