The mission of the Municipal Court is to interpret and adjudicate applicable laws and to support the local community by providing efficient and effective services through the promotion of justice. The court seeks to serve the citizens of San Angelo in an accountable, efficient and independent manner. In addition to providing fair and equal access to all citizens of San Angelo, the court also strives to facilitate the timely disposition of cases with prompt and courteous service.

Municipal courts occupy a unique position in the Texas judicial system. More citizens come into personal contact with the municipal courts than with all other Texas courts combined. The reason for the vast majority of appearances is a traffic citation.

Municipal courts provide cities with a means to enforce misdemeanor criminal laws and ordinances within their boundaries. Traffic offenses and violations of the penal code can be filed on any person 10 years of age and older. The Legislature provides courts with special handling provisions for juvenile defendants.
