Recycling

Tan-colored trash carts are emptied on a weekly basis and should be reserved for bagged household waste and bagged grass clippings/leaves. On the same day the tan cart is emptied, a separate truck will come by to empty the home’s green cart of the recyclables inside or to pick up bulk trash items. Recyclables should not be bagged.

By 7 a.m. on collection day customers should roll their carts to their front curb or within 2 feet of the alley, depending upon a home's collection location. The cart’s handles should be facing backward, toward the home. Carts need to be placed at least 3 feet from each other, from trees and from mailboxes, and at least 5 feet from any parked vehicles. This ensures the carts can be emptied via the controls inside the automated trucks.

Additional carts will be available for a monthly fee of $6.47 for trash and $1.62 for recyclables. To receive additional trash and/or recycling bins, fill out this additional cart form.

Special pickup services will be available at no additional charge to disabled customers who cannot move the carts. To receive that service, customers must fill out and submit this Disability Exemption Request form.

As with any of Republic's services, if customers have questions, they can call Republic's offices at 325-481-7700 during business hours. 

• Butts Recycling, 615 W. 11th St., accepts cardboard, chip board, paper feed sacks and paper bags, plastic No. 1 and No. 2; newspapers including inserts, office paper, phone books, hard and soft bound books, steel and tin cans, aluminum beverage cans and aluminum food cans that have been washed with labels removed.

Butts is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is no fee. There are no drop-offs after hours. FMI: 325-653-8957.

• San Angelo city residents with their most recent official water bill and a photo ID with a corresponding address can also drop off e-waste such as computers, TVs, printers, copiers, fax machines, ink cartridges, DVD and VHS players, CDs and VHS tapes at the San Angelo Landfill. There is a small fee for non-city residents.

The landfill is open 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. FMI: 325-481-7701.

Mixed metals and appliances without Freon can be taken to:

• ACME Iron & Metal, 720 N. Buchanan St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. FMI: 325-653-1407.

• Big Country Recycling, 5117 Armstrong St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. FMI: 325-949-5865.

• Concho Iron & Metal, 1000 Upton St. Call 325-657-8191 for hours.

• Properly place bins and bulk items in their collection spot by 7 a.m. on their pickup day.
• Place all materials inside one of the provided bins. Waste left on the ground or in a personal trash container will not be picked up.
• Bag garbage placed in the tan bins. This prevents trash from being spilled.
• Recyclables should not be bagged before being placed in the green bin.
• Fill out an online request form for additional garbage or recycling carts.
• Remove bins from streets once they have been emptied.

The following items should NOT be placed in recycling carts:

• Mixed papers.
• Nos. 3-7 plastics, such as:
  • Plastic grocery bags.
  • Pill bottles.
  • Bubble wrap.
  • Frozen food bags and chip bags.
  • Yogurt, butter, cream cheese containers.
• Waxed cartons.
• Batteries.
• Styrofoam, including food containers, cups and packing peanuts.
• Glass.
• Foil.
• Plastic or metal clothes hangers.
• Light bulbs.
• Hazardous or toxic product containers (ex. paint cans or lighter fluid containers).
• Food and wet waste.
• Food-contaminated paper plates and napkins.
• Appliances and electronics.
• Garden hoses.
• Rubber balls and sports equipment.
• Tires.
• Wood.
• Yard waste.

Republic's curbside recycling is an all-in-one program, meaning all recyclables are placed into one bin with no sorting, though all recyclables must be clean, empty and dry. The following items should be placed in the green recycling cart:

• Flattened corrugated cardboard.
• Boxboard, cereal and frozen food boxes.
• Plastics: No. 1 and 2 plastics only
  • No. 1 plastics include soda and water bottles, mouthwash bottles, peanut butter containers, salad dressing and vegetable oil containers. Please briefly clean before recycling.
  • No. 2 plastics include milk jugs, juice bottles, bleach, detergent, household cleaner bottles and shampoo bottles.
• Steel, tin and aluminum cans.
• Empty aerosol cans.
